What is BPH?

Your prostate gland, which secretes fluid to protect your sperm, goes through two periods of growth. The first stage is during puberty, when it doubles in size. The second stage is after age 25, where it continues to grow as you age.

BPH, also known as an enlarged prostate, is a common health condition that affects men as they age. As the prostate expands, it may begin to block or press on your urethra and bladder, which may lead to symptoms such as difficulty urinating or feeling like you can’t empty your bladder.

The symptoms of BPH can affect your quality of life, but Dr. Emery and his team offer numerous treatments that help relieve these issues.

What are the symptoms of BPH?

Common symptoms of BPH include:

  • Frequent urination or night urination, known as nocturia
  • Feeling like you can’t empty your bladder
  • Difficulty urinating, weak stream, or dribbling at the end
  • Straining to urinate

Some men with BPH also experience urinary tract infections (UTI), blood in their urine, or not being able to urinate at all.

How is BPH treated?

Dr. Emery offers several treatment options that can relieve your BPH symptoms, including:

  • Urolift®: in-office procedure to open up the urethra
  • Saw palmetto: herbal supplement to relax the prostate
  • Alpha blockers: relaxes bladder neck to improve stream
  • Transurethral microwave therapy (TUMT): outpatient procedure for small to medium prostate
  • Diode therapy: laser treatment to improve stream
  • Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP): gold standard treatment, requires a short hospital stay
  • Transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP): incision of bladder neck and prostate, a one-night hospital stay

An open prostatectomy is also a treatment option for a very large prostate.

After an evaluation, Dr. Emery develops an individualized treatment plan based on diverse factors such as your overall health, age, size and shape of your prostate, damage to your bladder, and types of medication you take.

What is Urolift?

Urolift is a 30-minute procedure Dr. Emery performs in the office to open up your urethra and improve urine flow. The minimally invasive treatment lifts your prostate, which relieves urinary symptoms by keeping the urethra unobstructed.

To minimize discomfort during the procedure, Dr. Emery uses a local anesthetic. You may feel some mild discomfort after treatment, but these effects resolve quickly.

When you’re ready to properly manage your prostate health and prevent or relieve symptoms of BPH, call today or book an appointment with the urology department by using the online booking agent.
